Getting into my car and approaching the University of Essex for my first day back at school was daunting. It was Tuesday, 25th October 2022 and at noon, I would attend my first lecture in Journalism. My offer to join the University had only arrived on 18th October. I arrived on week 4 of the first Semester. My nerves were explosive, and my excitement of self-achievement was justified.
I spent an hour trying to login to the University Wifi. I had to locate classrooms through the internet rather than a map. What I actually needed was an real live human being to help me through this day. A Mother figure to show me what to do, like I have done for years, for my now 17-year-old son.
Simple tasks for the non-mature students were, and are, ridiculously complicated to me. The reality is, I am surrounded by young ones whose understanding of my conundrum was alien to them. I am convinced that using the internet and social media is the equivalent of brushing your teeth, showering or getting dressed for the young ones.
You will be pleased to know I did arrive at my first lesson but not at noon. I arrived ten minutes early at my official second lesson at two o’clock. It is a very proud moment when you can brush your teeth for the first time. My next step is showering and maybe moving on to getting dressed by myself.
