The Colchester and District Tennis Championships finals on Saturday, 31st August, added another chapter to its storied 218-year history. Held at the picturesque Frinton-on-Sea Lawn Tennis Club, the event celebrated its 93rd edition in conjunction with the club’s 125th anniversary, drawing tennis enthusiasts from all corners of the district.
The competition was fierce on the club’s sixteen well maintained grass courts, where players battled not only their opponents but also the elements. Intense bursts of swirling winds and unexpected downpours tested the resolve of both athletes and spectators alike. However, neither the weather nor the competition could dampen the spirit of the day, which culminated in thrilling displays of skill, endurance, and sportsmanship.
Colchester’s Mayor, Lesley Scott-Boutell, was on hand to present the awards, praising the competitors and the community. “I loved watching the tennis and the pure sportsmanship,” she remarked. “What a lovely club and a friendly and welcoming community.”
Key Matches
The men’s open singles final saw Scott Bowman triumph over Thomas Perry in a gripping showdown. Bowman’s precision and power proved too much for Perry, securing him the coveted title.

Facing off against Lizzie Thompson, Fung navigated the shifting weather conditions with poise, playing a match that seamlessly transitioned from grass to hard court due to the rain. But Fung’s day was far from over. Teaming up with Chantal Griffiths, she went on to clinch the women’s doubles title, defeating the formidable duo of Shiho Main and Soozi Moffat.
The men’s doubles final was another highlight, with Andrew Knights and Pierre Smith emerging victorious over Daniel Cotton and Thomas Perry. Their synergy on the court was evident, as they outmaneuvered their opponents with a combination of sharp volleys and strategic placements.
In the mixed doubles, Alexander Brown and Amber Taylor showcased their chemistry, securing a win against Fungai Mvududu and Karina Cordero.
